Petrified wood is fossilized wood where the original organic material has been replaced over time by minerals, usually silicas like chalcedony and quartz. Unlike plant fossils which are often just impressions fossilized wood is usually a three-dimensional representation displaying the shape, grain, and cellular structure of the once living tree.
